HDR UNCLOAKED

This is a very simple guide intended as a basic introduction to those wanting to try HDR without all the ‘frilly’ bits found in other ‘simple’ guides.

Ok, so just so that you know what it stands for (and can casually drop it into the conversation) it’s High Dynamic Range – don’t worry about it.

First there’s light and one of the ways light can vary is ‘intensity’ – it ranges from very dark to very bright – at either of these extremes it’s difficult to see any detail – you cant see what you’re looking at! Continue reading »

VOXTIP#9 ….DON’T FOLLOW THE HERD, BE ONE OF THE 10%.

Now I have to admit, these figures are guesstimates,  but I’ve been looking at photographs and photographers for a long time so I don’t think I’m too far out. What am I talking about?

Well I reckon that some 90% of all the photographs taken in the world today are shot from eye level and/or with the camera in the ‘landscape’ orientation

VOXTIP#8 ….COMPOSITION, THE MAGIC THREE

Are you beginning to see a pattern here – this is the third time the number 3 has figured in composition – weird huh!

This week I want you to consider three elements that can make the difference between a bland photo and an image which is worthy of the viewer’s attention. They are, putting it simply, ‘form’, ‘texture’ and ‘colour’ – or in the case of monochrome, ‘shades of black & white’.

VOXTIP#7 ….COMPOSITION, INVITE THE VIEWER IN!

I was lucky enough to be able to see the amazing David Hockney Exhibition – ‘A Bigger Picture’ – at the Royal Academy in London, England. To say that I was blown away is an understatement – an astonishing artist who always excites me. Continue reading »

VOXTIP#6 ….COMPOSITION, THE DEVIL IS IN THE DETAIL!

I can remember watching Chris Packham on TV dismissing photographs because something was out of place, not quite to his liking – a reed in the wrong spot or a minor distraction in the back ground.

What’s more important, I’ve sometimes got home with what I thought was a good shot only to discover something in it that I hadn’t noticed at the time. The highs and lows of a shot can often be the minutiae – ‘the devil is in the detail’.

VOXTIP#5 …COMPOSITION, GET IT STRAIGHT

A classic banana skin in photography is the ‘wonky horizon’ or the ‘leaning vertical’.

VOXTIP#4 …. COMPOSITION, DO IT BY THIRDS.

Many photographers, when starting out, decide on the main subject of the photograph and then carefully place it at the centre of the image, where, of course, the important bit that you want people to focus on should be. You’d think so, wouldn’t you……

VOXTIP#3 ….READY, STEADY, GO.

There will be many times when you will either want to move the camera to induce a sense of action or achieve motion blur by using the appropriate camera setting. However, it is likely that for the majority of  photos you will want pin sharp images, so lets work on this first.

Now, there are camera settings that will help you to achieve it but in this course I want you simply to work on physically keeping the camera steady whilst operating the shutter(pressing the button).

VOXTIP#2 ….RELAX, JUST DO IT!

What I am about to tell you may fall into the category of ‘it’s obvious, stupid’ …. BUT, so many peeps today seem to want to acquire a skill instantly or perhaps absorb it passively.

It reminds me of the woman who, at the end of a concert given by a world renown pianist, spoke to him saying “That was wonderful, I’d give my life to be able to play like that.” To which the pianist replied “Madam, I have.”

[Thanks to Amanda McGhee for allowing me to use her brilliant baby photo.]

Ok, so here’s the tip – to paraphrase ‘Frankie Goes To Hollywood’ – (feel free to sing along)

Relax, just do it
When you want to get to it
Relax, just do it
If you wanna get good
